Walgreens Covid Testing Appointment Online

VDH has partnered with Walgreens Pharmacy to offer free COVID-19 antigen tests (using Abbott BinaxNOW tests) at many stores across the state. Stores participating in the program are listed below. Walgreens staff will watch patients collect the nasal swab for the COVID-19 test. Walgreens staff will then run the test and provide results within 24 hours. Tests are for adults and children aged 3 and older. VDH suggests using these tests for those who:

  • have been in close contact with someone known or suspected to have COVID-19, 
  • those at high risk of illness, and 
  • frontline staff, such as those who work in schools, childcare, and healthcare. 

If you feel sick and think you may have COVID-19, getting an antigen (or PCR) test is important to see if you have the illness so you can take action quickly (such as isolating yourself from family members, if needed).

Who should get tested? People with symptoms or signs of COVID-19 regardless of vaccination status.  Most people who have had close contact with someone known or suspected to have COVID-19 including: Fully vaccinated people people should be tested 3-5 days following a known exposure to someone with suspected or confirmed COVID-19, even if you don’t have symptoms. People who are not fully vaccinated should be tested immediately after an exposure and again at 5-7 days following exposure if the first test is negative. People who tested positive for COVID-19 within the past 3 months and recovered, do not need to get tested after exposure as long as they do not have symptoms.

Appointments are scheduled through the Walgreens website.  Enter your zip code and select “Rapid Antigen Test ” to locate tests that are covered as part of this partnership. The form to schedule an appointment may ask about your symptoms and health insurance information. Note that health insurance is not required to schedule an appointment, and patients do not need to pay for testing.

How our COVID-19 testing works at Walgreens

  • Choose a location and time for your COVID-19 test.
  • Enter the patient information and complete a quick questionnaire.
  • At the time of your appointment, go to the pharmacy drive-thru (use the inside lane if there are multiple) or follow signs to the store’s designated testing area. Do not go into the store.
  • Remain in your vehicle and show your confirmation email (digital copies accepted), a valid state ID or driver’s license, and your insurance card or voucher, if applicable.
  • Perform the nasal swab yourself under the direction of a pharmacy team member. Patients ages 3-18 will need a parent or legal guardian while they self-administer the COVID-19 test.
  • Receive an email with a secured link to test results.

How can I determine if the cost of my COVID test will be covered?

Free COVID-19 testing is available to patients ages 3+. If you receive a Diagnostic Test and have insurance, you will be asked to show your insurance card at the appointment and the lab may bill your insurer. You will not receive a bill from Walgreens or from any lab partner.

I’m traveling to Hawaii from the lower 48 states. What do I need to do?

The state of Hawaii requires visitors to quarantine for 14 days upon arrival or provide proof of a negative Covid-19 test, taken within 72 hours of departure. You must schedule an appointment with Walgreens to ensure your documentation is accepted by the state. The Rapid Diagnostic Test (ID NOW) and Diagnostic Lab Test (PCR) provided by Walgreens are nucleic acid amplification tests (NAAT). Both types are approved by the state of Hawaii, however the turnaround results time may vary. The Rapid Antigen Test (BinaxNOW) is not an approved test for travel to Hawaii. Does Walgreens provide COVID tests to minors? What are the age limits and what is needed for the test?

COVID-19 testing is available for minors who are 3 years of age and older. They must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian. As with adults, a Walgreens team member will instruct these patients on the self-administered nasal swab for the COVID-19 test. Minors may be assisted by their parent or legal guardian during the self-administration process.

What is the difference between the types of COVID tests offered by Walgreens?

PCR Laboratory Test: The RT-PCR Diagnostic Panel Test – NAAT is used to detect genetic material (mRNA) of the coronavirus and will be sent to a laboratory to determine results in a variable amount of time.²
Rapid NAAT Test: The Rapid Point-of-Care (POC) – NAAT test also detects genetic material (mRNA) of the virus. The test is performed on site with results available within 24 hours.
Rapid Antigen Test: Rapid Point-of-Care (POC) Test – Antigen is an antigen test that detects the presence of a specific viral antigen. The test is performed on site, with results available the same day. These tests imply current viral infection and help determine if an individual is actively infected with COVID-19 and can spread it to others. A follow-up diagnostic test may be required to confirm a positive result.

I don’t drive. Can I walk in for a COVID-19 test?

No, Walgreens is not equipped to perform walk-in testing at this time. Patients must arrive in a vehicle and are not permitted to exit the vehicle or enter the testing location.

What do I need to bring to my COVID-19 test?

Patients will be asked to bring:
Copy of their confirmation email
Valid state ID or driver’s license
Insurance card or voucher, if applicable
For patients ages 3–18, the parent or legal guardian who provided consent to test the patient will be asked to show a copy of the appointment confirmation email, a valid state ID or driver’s license, and insurance card or voucher.

I don’t see a location near me. How can I get tested?

Walgreens is working to expand contactless COVID-19 testing in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, state and local authorities. Additional testing sites will be listed online as they become available. For immediate testing needs, contact your local department of health.

What is a false negative COVID test result?

It is possible for this test to give a negative result that is incorrect (known as a false negative) in some people with COVID-19. This means that you could possibly still have COVID-19 even though the test is negative. If this is the case, your healthcare provider will consider the test result together with all other aspects of your medical history (such as symptoms, possible exposures, and geographical location of places you have recently traveled) in deciding how to care for you. It is important that you work with your healthcare provider to help you understand the next steps you should take.
